Chris Tomlin - Everlasting God

Unity Fest 2006 Michigan

  • Chris Tomlin’s new CD “See the Morning” hit shelves yesterday. This clip is from a song on that CD called “Everlasting God”. It’s simple, yet profound. I think that’s what I love about Chris’s music. It’s so hard/ impossible to describe God. Take the adjective used in the Title, everlasting. Meditate on that for just a few moments. It’s an immensely deep term, one we can only imagine a definition for. No one has ever experienced everlasting; no one can pull a handful of everlasting out of their pocket and show it to the class. The only way we can get a glimpse of everlasting is to look at God who is the First and the Last. I guess that’s probably why when people first asked God to tell them his name he simply responded, “I AM”.

We kind of touched on this topic last week at crossroads and a little bit last night. We try to use terms to define God, and there is nothing wrong with that, but ultimately God is who he is, unconfined by our terms. Before we use our terms (love, patience, justice, compassion, humility, forgiveness) to define God, we should first look to God as the standard by which we define our terms. Love can mean many things in the world today, but if we look at God we can see what true love is really like, we can see what true justice, humility, forgiveness, and patience, etc. are really like. And when we see that, how can we help but worship our Creator, our Savior, our King. Anyways, if your looking for a great praise and worship CD, I would commend this one. Love you guys, see you this weekend.
